42nd Street and 5th Avenue tower

Solange Fabião in collaboration with Steven Holl Architects, new york, 2002

Applying the ideas of expansion and integration with the surroundings, within a fully urban context, the 42nd Street & 5th Avenue tower’s formal dynamics stems from my desire to integrate 5th Avenue with Grand Central Station. Introducing a curvilinear form to the building’s geometry on the sidewalk level, the design aimed at facilitating pedestrian flux, while being in dialogue with the New York Public Library, which sits diagonally across the corner. It resulted in the creation of the “Open Book” plan. For the Latitude Plateau, a rooftop public space, I merged orthogonal, spherical and organic forms while integrating a James Turrell Skyspace. The design was presented at the Tall Buildings exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 2004, and acquired by the museum for its permanent collection that same year.
