The series of photograph was taken in Mitte, the central borough of Berlin, in 1990. It documents the early stages of the city’s transformation after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. I photographed the war ruins as kids played within debris and frames of beach chairs as if they were am strand (at the beach). I struggled to function in a culture, already very strange to me, which was itself in full transformation.
