This set underlines two very distinctive worlds: one where Dionysos engages with Pentheus, and the other of the Maenads, a cult of worshippers. The royal world, defined by power and vengeance, is anchored by a scaffolding structure in the back of the stage, while a silver, stingray-shaped throne sits in the palace of Thebes. The Maenads’ forest occupies the stage’s foreground: this large area of the stage is covered with dirt not only on the ground but also on the walls, such that it presents an under-earth environment. Surrounded by grime and darkness, the women of Thebes are consumed by inexplicable forces.
