Fragmental Field

1998-2020

“The Fragmental Field idea is an insight about a field: I try to understand this, while contemplating Walter DeMaria’s Broken Kilometer, what is that makes a field? A fragmental field comes to mind. It is not fragmented. Can a field fragment? What is it that holds a field together? What are the possible fields? Which order of linkage? What about an inconstant field? The complexities of a field. The impossibility of a broken-kilometer and the viability of a fragmental-field? Alternations within a field.” (S.F. 1998)

In 2020 I proposed my 1998 Fragmental Field project to the CERN ( The European Organization for Nuclear Research) Collide Residency Award program. My goal was to investigate the possibility of the existence of a fragmental field, and what that could mean in relation to quantum mechanics. My proposal was sent on December 4th, the application’s deadline was on December 7, 2020. A few days later, on December 10th, the headline “fragments of energy not waves or particles may be the fundamental building block of the universe” appeared on my screen. I was completely taken by the news, after all, what could be a Fragmental Field and what about the amazing timing of a proposal to CERN with this headline only a few days later? Timely synchronicity, this might have been, and in fact was the right moment to readdress this project. This proposal made me see clearly the interrelation of my art with science, stimulating my current research, EOs and Hintu where one of the main inquiries is the possibility of contemplating art in scientific terms, ‘Fundamental Art.’
