Loisium Visitors Center

SOLANGE FABIÃO IN COLLABORATION WITH STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS,Langenlois,Austria, 2001

Sixty minutes west of Vienna, on the edge of the town of Langenlois, this wine center and visitor facility celebrates a rich local heritage. A subterranean network that includes stone passages over 900 years old sits beneath the contemporary urban environment. My site analysis built upon the unification of elements under, in, and over at the site, together with my tilting of the cube that houses the visitor center, directed the complex, integrating the subterranean vault system, the wine and visitor center, and an accompanying hotel. The wine and visitor center, partially set into the earth of the vineyard, offers a ramp down into the vault system as well as a path up towards the hotel, such that the visitor gradually transverses from one element to the next.
