Valsa No.6

By Nelson Rodrigues, Set and Costume Design, Rio de Janeiro, 1988

In Valsa n.º 6, Brazilian play writer Nelson Rodrigues explores the psychology of Sonia, a young girl murdered at the age of fifteen. In between the murderous blow and her death, Sonia tries to piece together her memories and life. This set design, an abstract labyrinth, engages with the rigid and the dynamic: two solid vertical paired columns stand in contrast to oblique, see-through elements with variable directions. The design coincided with my studies about the diagonal, explored in Diagonal System (1987–83).
